JSPL now produces TMT bars from its 1 MTPA re-bar mill at PATRATU, JHARKHAND.these rebars have been specifically designed for high strength applications. The rebars are hot rolled and are subjected to on line Thermomechanical Treatment (TMT). TMT is a combination of plastic deformation of steel in austenitic stage followed by quenching and further tempering. The controls at each critical operation ensure uniform properties in each rebar. They are ideal for high rises, dams, bridges, individual houses and any critical structures where high yield strength is required without compromising on the elongation properties. JSPL rebars are made to the latest BIS 1786, 2008. They are available in FE 415/FE 500 / FE 550 Grades. FE 500 D also being developed for seismic activity prone areas. THE COOLING PROCESS In bar mills, directly after the last rolling stand, the bar passes through the “T.M.T PROCESS” Charged Quenching System achieving a short and intensive cooling of the surface. Because of the reduction in the temperature at a rate higher than the critical rate for marten site quenching the surface layer of the re-bar is converted to a hardened structure while the core remains austenitic. After the intensive cooling, the bar is exposed to air and the core reheats the quenched surface layer by conduction, therefore tempering the external marten site.
