Consolidation test is un-dimensional test considered extremely important in soil mechanics. Sample taken from adjacent areas of a single site show differential settlement even when tested using same techniques. Soil of similar strength may show varying consolidation. Samples are very carefully prepared and vertical settlement of the specimen in saturated or drained conditions carefully recorded when known load is applied.

The method covers the evaluation of the relative quality of sub grade soils, but is applicable to sub-base and some base course materials. It is useful in determining the load carrying capacity in the field when in-place density and water contents are such that the degree of saturation is 80 % or greater, when material is dimensionless and coarse grained, such that it is not
effected by changes in water contents and when the material has been in-place for considerable time.

Determination of water repellency, resistance to wetting (in term of water absorb) and resistance to penetration (in term of water penetrated) of fabric done by an instrument known as bundasmann type apparatus. The bundasmann type apparatus made of four specimen holders which hold four specimens of the fabrics under test the specimen holders are rotate at the fixed RPM by means of a worm reduction gear box and an electric motor. The four specimen holders are mounted on teh assembly so that the specimens are titled at specified angle to the horizontal. Each sample holder is provided with four wiper arms fixed at right angle to each other and rotating about the axis of the cup. There are two aluminum tanks one at the bottom where the sample holder assembly is fixed and the other is fitted at the tp of the instrument, where the brass jets are fitted.
APPLICATION : This procedure is used for measuring the tear strength of the thermoplastic films or non-rigid sheet. By this test method, we determine the average force to propagate tearing through a specified length of plastic film or non-rigid sheeting. This test method is of value in ranking relative tearing resistance of various plastic film and this sheeting of comparable thickness.
