Spray dryers offer an effective and efficient method of removal of surface or on bound moisture from a feed product. Spray dryers are pneumatic driers having very low residence time within the equipment, thus flashing off the moisture from the feed. They are used for efficient drying of moist powders. slurries, filter cakes, granules, etc. They operate on varying throughput rates from few hundred kilograms per hour to hundreds of tons per hour. Low temperature dehumidified air could be used for heat sensitive products to hot gases with temperature upto 500 - 600 deg. C. for temperature resistant products.

The laboratory spray dryers is a totally self contained unit and is supplied ready for immediate operation. The laboratory spray dryers unit is compact and can be kept on a table top or bench. The solution or suspension is converted to powder in a single operation. The unit can be used to establish new products/processes as the quantity of sample required is small, only 50 to 100 ml.
Principles:
A peristaltic pump delivers liquid from the sample container to the fluid nozzle mounted on the drying chamber. Compressed air from the inbuilt compressor is also supplied to the nozzle, resulting in atomization of the liquid into a fine spray.
Air from the blower is heated by an electrical air heater and blown through the drying chamber. Due to the large surface ;area, drying is very rapid, resulting in a sharp drop in temperature. Wet material is diffused in to the stream of hot air or gas fetched through a drying duct. There are cyclones or bag filters for product separation and with the help of flash dryers, feed materials such as powders, gels, slurries, granules and flakes can be easily processed.
Our wheel or disc rotating Rotary Disc Atomization is used for atomizing the liquid feed at high speed. It distributes the liquid centrally on the wheel/disc/cup. Moreover, the feed liquid is centrifugally accelerated to high velocity before being discharged as fine droplets/ mist. These are available in straight/ curved vanes, pinwheels and multi-layer discs designs in diameters from 60 to 350 mm.
COMP Closed Loop Spray Dryers are used when the product is prone to oxidation or the solvent vapours are inflammable/explosive. COMP supplies nitrogen purged closed loop systems.
We have designed spray drying plants that is also based on single stage operation and extensively used to convert solutions, suspensions and slurries into dry powder within a few seconds without any intermediate handling. There is a spray nozzle atomizer present down to the fluid bed from where the spray is created and agglomeration incorporating finer, recycled material also takes place. Exhaust air moves out through the roof causing which in turn causes further agglomeration in the spray zone. There is present a recirculation system which uses cyclones or bag filters, or a combination of both for recycling fines to the spray dryer chamber, the integrated fluid bed, or the external fluid bed. This process yields non-dusty, free flowing agglomerated powders with high flavor retention. Third stage involves fluid bed as drying / cooling.

Single stage spray dryers offer particle sizes of dried material from 50-250 microns. For producing large particles Fluidized Spray Dryers are employed. The atomization of the feed solution is done to produce large droplets and the drying in the first stage is done keeping the moisture content of the powder relatively high.
The moist powder is dried in the integrated fluid bed system at the bottom of the drying chamber using hit air, and in the process, agglomeration of fines to larger particles takes place. The absolute fines are carried with the exhaust air leaving the drying chamber to be collected in the cyclone and further recalculated to the drying chamber. Tertiary drying systems comprise of employing additional external drying system to further increase the particle size.
