Silica or SiO2 is present in large quantities throughout the earth's surface in various forms. Its low coefficient of thermal expansion is the principle reason for its use in objects exposed to a wide range of heat and cold. Its principle use is in the manufacture of glass.
Industrial Foundry Sand consists primarily of clean, uniformly sized, high-quality silica sand or lake sand that is bonded to form molds for ferrous (iron and steel) and nonferrous (copper, aluminum, brass) metal castings. Although these sands are clean prior to use, after casting they may contain Ferrous (iron and steel) industries account for approximately 95 percent of foundry sand used for castings. The automotive industry and its parts suppliers are the major generators of foundry sand.
The most common casting process used in the foundry industry is the sand cast system. Virtually all sand cast molds for ferrous castings are of the green sand type. Green sand consists of high-quality silica sand, about 10 percent bentonite clay (as the binder), 2 to 5 percent water and about 5 percent sea coal (a carbonaceous mold additive to improve casting finish). Silica sand is produced by crushing sand stone or quartzite of open texture, and washing and garding it to yield requisite grain distribution. Silica flour is produced by crushing grinding and washing the high grade quartz, quartzite rocks or from white silica sand.

Silica sand (industrial sand) is a high-purity quartz (SiO2) sand deposited by natural processes. Depending on its chemical and physical characteristics, silica sand is used as glass sand, foundry sand, abrasives, fillers, and hydraulic fracturing sand (also termed "frac" sand by the petroleum industry) matter. Sand is a naturally occurring, finely divided rock, comprising particles or granules ranging in size from 0.0625 (or 1⁄16) to 2 millimeters. An individual particle in this range size is termed a sand grain. The next smaller size class in geology is silt: particles below 0.0625 mm down to 0.004 mm in size. The next larger size class above sand is gravel; with particles ranging from 2 mm up to 64 mm (see grain size for standards in use). Sand feels gritty when rubbed between the fingers (silt feels like flour).
