The electrolysis process is used to produce hydrogen and oxygen. When we talk about electrolysis of water, it implies the decomposition of water (H2O) into hydrogen gas (H2) and oxygen (O2) gas and this is done by using an electric current which passes through the water. This electrolytic process is used in many industrial applications when hydrogen is needed. In our plants also, we make use of this process.
An electrical power source is connected to two electrodes which are placed in the water. Hydrogen will appear at the cathode, which is the negatively charged electrode, where electrons are pumped into the water. On the other hand, oxygen will appear at the anode, which is the positively charged electrode. The generated amount of hydrogen is twice the amount of oxygen. The PSA Oxygen Gas Plants are designed to deliver about 95% pure oxygen.
The gas is produced through a technology called PSA technology and similar to nitrogen the oxygen is also separated from compressed air using Zeolite Molecular Sieves of special grade.
In some cases a vacuum pump is used for better adsorption hence the units are also known as VPSA units.

Nitrogen generation plant based on the PSA process consists of two absorbers filled with carbon molecular sieves (CMS). Compressed and purified air is passes through the absorbers. Mainly oxygen is absorbed on the carbon molecular sieves and nitrogen enriched gas is leaving the absorber. The oxygen concentration can be reduced to almost all required levels. During adsorption in one absorber the second absorber is totally regenerated just by depressurization to ambient pressure. The oxygen enriched off gas is vented. After about one minute adsorption in one absorber the process controller is switching over to the second absorber.

The nitrogen plants consist oftwo towers operating on pressureswing adsorption process. Purified compressed air is passed through one tower whereinoxygen is adsorbed and the outlet gas contains high purity nitrogen. A portion of this nitrogen is used to regenerate the other tower which is in the regeneration cycle.The outlet gas from the regenerating tower is then vented into the atmosphere with 30-35% oxygen (by volume) content. Oxygen is separated from air using unique zeolite ceramic molecular sieves.
Dry, oil free air at ambient temperature and elevated pressure is passed through vessels (adsorbers) containing molecular sieve. The sieve holds on to (adsorbs) nitrogen molecules in preference to the oxygen molecules, thus separating oxygen from air. The nitrogen molecules are released (desorbed) from the sieve when the pressure in the adsorber is reduced, thus making the sieve fresh again (regeneration). Typically two vessels are employed for continuous supply of oxygen. The entire cycle is microprocessor controlled and no operator attention is required for normal operation.
The only running cost is electricity. There are no other costs such as rentals for cylinders/tanks, transportation, taxes, deposits. No manpower is needed to procure, load, unload, connect and disconnect heavy high pressure cylinders. Risk of running out due to unpredictable deliveries is eliminated.
