The jelly is manufactured according to the pharmacopoeia stipulations, which lay down the limit for ultra-violet absorbency to make sure that the jelly is free from carcinogenic compounds. According to Indian pharmacopoeia stipulation, the ultra-violet absorbency for white petroleum jelly, extinction of a 1cm, layer of 0.05 W/V solution in ISO- octane should not be more than 0.5 at 290 nm. are white, translucent, odourless, when cold & rubbed on skin &
tasteless. These are Soluble
in Chloroform and solvent ether, but are Insoluble in Alcohol and
Ether & are
unctuous to touch & retain their character.

exhibit very good lubricity properties & are used as a vehicle
(Ointment Base) in dermatological ointments & skin creams for
