Petroleum jelly is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbon. It is used mainly in cosmetics.

The jelly is manufactured according to the pharmacopoeia stipulations, which lay down the limit for ultra-violet absorbency to make sure that the jelly is free from carcinogenic compounds. According to Indian pharmacopoeia stipulation, the ultra-violet absorbency for white petroleum jelly, extinction of a 1cm, layer of 0.05 W/V solution in ISO- octane should not be more than 0.5 at 290 nm. These retain their gel like structure.
