Atmospheric Air mainly consists of Oxygen and Nitrogen gases along with small quantities of water vapour, Carbon Dioxide, Argon, Helium, etc. Oxygen and Nitrogen from the Air are separated due to difference in boiling points by distillation through a fractional column.
Atmospheric Air is sucked in by a multi stage Compressor through a filter and is compressed to the design pressure. The compressed Air is then passed through inter-coolers, Industrial Refrigerator, Moisture Separators, and then to the Molecular Sieve Battery for removal of Carbon Dioxide, Hydrocarbons and Moisture from the process Air. This pure Air then passes through the 1st Heat Exchanger, where it is cooled by the out going Nitrogen and Oxygen. Part of this cooled Air is passed through Expansion Engine and the other part through the 2nd Heat Exchanger. Stage 1 – compression of air
The free saturated air is drawn from atmosphere through a highly efficient dry-type suction filter into the first stage of the horizontally balanced opposed, lubricated reciprocating air compressor. The air is compressed over a multistage process to the desired air pressure (30-40 bar) and is then sent to the process skid for further use.
Stage 2- purification of air
The compressed air is passed into an after cooler where the temperature is reduced to around 35 degree centigrade after which it is chilled in a chilling unit to a temperature of 12 degree centigrade and then passed through a moisture separator where the condensed moisture gets removed before entering into molecular sieve battery.

Nitrogen is separted from air through adsorption process using carbon molecualr sieves as desiccant.
The tecnology is known as PSA technology which means Pressure Swing Adsorption.
The PSA Nitrogen gas plants are particularly used to produce Nitrogen gas of different purities ranging 95% to 99.99% directly through this technology, however if the gas is required to be further purified upto a level of 99.9999% then additional putrification units are being attached to the system to deliver UHP nitrogen.

Nitrogen generation plant based on the PSA process consists of two absorbers filled with carbon molecular sieves (CMS). Compressed and purified air is passes through the absorbers. Mainly oxygen is absorbed on the carbon molecular sieves and nitrogen enriched gas is leaving the absorber. The oxygen concentration can be reduced to almost all required levels. During adsorption in one absorber the second absorber is totally regenerated just by depressurization to ambient pressure. The oxygen enriched off gas is vented. After about one minute adsorption in one absorber the process controller is switching over to the second absorber.
