  Pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) is a better method for recovering natural organic compounds from solid matrices due to economic, environmental and other constraints, .PHWE is emerging as an alternative and is recently under intensive study. Pressurized hot water refers to compressed hot water maintained at a pressure above its saturation pressure. That is, the hot water is in liquid phase.   The Theory.
  Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) is the process of separating one component (the extractant) from another (the matrix) using supercritical fluids as the extracting solvent. Extraction is usually from a solid matrix, but can also be from liquids. SFE can be used as a sample preparation step for analytical purposes, or on a larger scale to either strip unwanted material from a product (e.g. decaffeination) or collect a desired product (e.g. essential oils). Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most used supercritical fluid, sometimes modified by co-solvents such as ethanol or methanol. Extraction conditions for supercritical CO2 are above the critical temperature of 31°C and critical pressure of 74 Bar. Addition of modifiers may slightly alter this.   Degumming is the first stage in the refining process. It is sued to separate the gums, phospholipids, proteins etc… that are insoluble in oil when hydrated.

  The GEU-500 Glass Extraction Unit utilizes the Soxhlet method of cleaning core samples, which is an API standard that involves boiling solvent, condensing the clean solvent vapors, collecting the clean solvent in a reflux chamber that contains the dirty samples, and recycling the dirty solvent back into the boiling flask of solvent. The reflux chamber with core samples then refills with clean solvent and the cycle goes on until the operator stops the process. This hot solvent soak cleaning method usually produces clean core samples in 4 to 16 hours depending on the permeability of the core and the viscosity of the oil in the pores.

  The liquid to be extracted is poured into an extraction vessel. Solvent is boiled in a reboiler vessel and condensed in an overhead condenser, the condensed liquid collecting in a reflux divider and passing through pipework to the extraction vessel. The pipework incorporates valves in order that the solvent can enter the extraction vessel at either the base or the top, depending on the relative densities of the solvent and liquid to be extracted. The solvent and the extracted liquid pass back to the reboiler and process is repeated unit the extraction is complete.
