It is Tonic, Diuretic, Demulcent, Expectorant, Emmenagogue and Laxative. It is used for allaying coughs and catarrhal infections, useful in irritable conditions of mucous membrane of urinary organs. Useful in sore throat, cough, anorexia and persistent low fever. It is also used in flavoring of tobacco, confectionery, beverages, jams and marmalades. Roots are used in the treatment of Addison's disease, asthma, bronchitis, coughs, peptic ulcer, arthritis and allergic complaints. Externally, the roots are used in the treatment of herpes, eczema and shingles.

Oleoresins are extracted by a process of solvent extraction, followed by removal of the solvent to extremely low levels typically less than 25-30 parts per million. Its quality is evaluated on the basis of presence of the active ingredients in desired levels. They are widely used as a diluted dispersion plated on a neutral dry carrier or as a diluted blend in a soluble medium such as vegetable oil to match the desired strength of the ground spice/herb.
