Further, these plants consist of two pressure vessels containing cation and anion exchange resins. Typically, the cation resin operates in the hydrogen cycle. The cations in the water (i. E. Calcium, magnesium and sodium) pass through the cation exchange resin where they are chemically exchanged for hydrogen ions. The water then passes through the anion exchange resin where the anions (i. E. Chloride, sulphate, nitrate and bicarbonate) are chemically exchanged for hydroxide ions. The final water from this process consists essentially of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions, which is the chemical composition of pure water. These are the water treatment plants where the raw water having high concentration of total dissolved solids is passed through a hydrogen based cation resin bed where all the positive ions in water are replaced with hydrogen ions from the resin and water coming out of it is free from positive ions. Partially treated water from cation is then passed through a hydroxyl based anion resin where all the negative ions of water are replaced with hydroxyl ions of resin bed and water coming out of it is free from unwanted negative ions.
