A whirling motion is imparted to the gas entering a cyclonic collector. This action generates centrifugal force that concentrates particles of entrained dust at the interior walls of the collecting tubes. The particles then fall and are discharged from the bottom of the tube. Clean gas exits through the outlet at the collecting tubes vertical centre line.
Multiple-cyclone separators are also known as multi clones, consist of a number of small-diameter cyclones, operating in parallel and having a common gas inlet and outlet, as shown in the figure. Multi-clones operate on the same principle as cyclones--creating a main downward vortex and an ascending inner vortex.
Multiclones are more efficient than single cyclones because they are longer and smaller in diameter. Collection of dust in a cyclone separators is based on the action of inertial (centrifugal) forces upon dust particles.
Cyclone separators are normally used for the collection of coarse dust particles. The dusty air is introduced in the cyclone separator from the top through the inlet pipe which is tangential to the cylindrical portion of the cyclone. Thus the gases move downwards in whirling motion forming a peripheral vertex and giving rise to centrifugal forces, resulting in throwing of dust particles towards the wall of the cyclone and moving downwards into the hopper. The gases after reaching the end of the conical portion changes its direction and moves upwards towards the outlet forming an inner vertex. Due to this upward movement of gases against gravity more dust particles are separated and fall into the conical hopper for subsequent removal.

Wet cyclones offered by us are similar to dry cyclone except that an arrangement of water spraying on the inside of wall has been provided. The majority of dust particles reaches the film of water and is captured by it. At the inlet, the water film is disintegrated thus giving rise to a mist of water with dust settling on the droplets thus produced. Water containing dust particles tickle down the casting wall collecting in a setting tank through "U" seal fitted at the bottom of the wet cyclone.
