In this type Compressed air, directly from Air compressor discharge is taken to Air dryer inlet through insulated pipelines, at 120 deg C(minimum) temperature. This hot air is passed through one drying vessel where saturated desiccant is regenerated by this hot air. After picking up moisture from desiccant bed, the air is cooled in an intermediate cooler. Here moisture is condensed and removed by auto drain valve. Cooled to 40oC, this air passes through the second drying vessel where balance moisture gets adsorbed and Dry air comes out. Cycle time is 4 hours regeneration & 4 hours drying. After 4 hours the changeover of vessels takes place automatically. In regeneration cycle heating of the bed is only 2 hours, and thereafter the bed is cooled by Dry air. After bed cooling, Dry air is again cooled to 40oC in another cooler, and delivered out of unit as Dry air at 40deg C temp.

Heat Reactivated dryers are used when one needs compressed air of very low Dew point of (-)60oC or (-)80o Deg C. In this design, the desiccant is regenerated at higher temperature, along with small quantity of Dry air purge. Due to purging with Dry air and thermal regeneration, residual moisture loading on desiccant becomes low and this gives very low Dew point.
The Drying unit has 2-vessels filled with Activated Alumina or Molecular sieves desiccant. One vessel remains in drying cycle for 4 hours, while other vessel is simultaneously regenerated at atmospheric pressure. Around 3% flow of dryer capacity is used as purge for regeneration. Electrical heaters are provided in a central finned Stainless steel pipe in both drying vessels. Heating cycle is for 2 hours and in this time hot purge air increases desiccant temperature to around 100oC. At this temperature regeneration is complete (due to dry air purge). Theory Of Operation:
In HOC type dryer, hot air at 120 degree celsius to 140 degree celsius from Compressor discharge is directly used for the desiccant regeneration. Running cost of this dryer is virtually NIL. It has two drying towers filled with the Activated alumina or molecular sieve desiccant and they alternate in process every 4-hour automatically.

For industrial use or process air requirement , the air should be clean and free from moisture. When air is compressed to 7Kg/cmg, the temperature of discharged air increases to around 140C. The after cooler and separator installed after the compressor are to the remove the moisture and oil. As an example, a 100Nm3/hr capacity compressor with suction conditions of 40C & 50%RH when compressed to 7.0 kg/cmg and subsequently cooled to 40C will result in condensation of around 30lits of water. The air still will contain 8000ppm moisture. At 45C, compressed air contains 10,500ppm, at 50C, 13,500ppm moisture and at 60C, 21,600ppm moisture which are to be removed by Air Dryer. Energy Conservation by Heat of Compression type compressed air dryer is a breakthrough in compressed air drying technology. The hot air from the oil-free air Compressor at 120C or higher temp, is used directly for regeneration of the desiccant bed in the compressed air dryer. After regeneration, this air is cooled down to 40C in the water cooled after cooler and then it is dried in second tower. Thus the use of heaters is eliminated. For eg. in the 6 + 6 Hrs. Cycle the hot air is fed for regeneration of desiccant bed for 4 Hrs. and for balance 2 Hr. a changeover takes place where the air is first cooled in an after cooler, then dried and before going to the outlet, cools the regenerated desiccant bed, thus bringing it down to ambient temperature. This cycle is reversed for the next 6 Hrs. where the Adsorber drying the air in the previous cycle goes for regeneration and vice versa. There is considerable power saving in these type of Compressed Air Dryers and the dew point is also better
