The alloy exhibits a good combination of strength and ductility and is commonly selected whenever excellent cold working properties, bright finish and relatively low cost are desirable. A Copper Zinc Alloy containing Aluminium and small amount of Arsenic which is added as an inhibitor against dezincification. Inhibited Aluminium Brass resists the action of high velocity salt and brackish water and is commonly used for condenser tube. The outstanding characteristic of Aluminium Brass is the high resistance to impingement attack. Tubes of this alloy are recommended for use in marine and land power stations where cooling water velocities are high and where inhibited admiralty brass has failed from impingement. Guide to the selection of tube material: Sea Water: a. Dissolved salts more than 2000 ppm.b. Suspended solids more than 30 ppm.c. H2S or Ammonia is less that 1 ppm.Permissible average velocity of water 2.0 - 2.5 metres/sec.

These admiralty brass tubes are renowned for their characteristic of superior corrosion resistance in a moderately polluted river water and clean seawater, both stagnant or slow moving water. The most common and wrought form is tube for heat exchange equipment. These tubes are extensively used in various applications including; evaporators, condensate coolers, heaters, vent condensers, water heaters, generator, air coolers, turbine oil coolers for petrochemical, ship-building, power plants, desalinations plants etc.
Admiralty brass is generally used with fresh, clean waters free from suspended abrasive solids and originating from rivers lakes and canals. It may also be used with brackish or even saline water. The inhibitive action of arsenic protects Admiralty Brass from dezincification and the fully annealed alloy can also withstand stress-corrosion cracking. In waters containing less than 2000 ppm dissolved solids its use is allowed at flow rates of up to 3 m/s (10 ft/s) in sea waters a maximum speed of 1 m/s (3,0 ft/ s) is recommended. The presences of tin improve resistance to general corrosion in slightly polluted (sulphurised) water.
