Modern metallurgy has greatly increased the useful life of automotive gears. Automotive gears transmit torque and rotation through an angle from a power source to the driven member. Extreme pressure gear oil is a lubricant for automotive gears and bearings.
Automotive gears are machined from wrought bar stock and subsequently heat treated to develop the required surface hardness and tooth bending fatigue durability.
Automotive gear ratio is the number of turns of the drive wheels in relation to the number of turns of the engine. If the engine is considered the input and the drive wheel is considered to be the output then the input gear or the pinion is said to mate with the output gear or the ring gear to drive or rotate it.

Methods of Manufacturing
Face milled and face hobbed are two methods of manufacturing for spiral bevel gears. In the method of face milled, the grinding of the contacting surface is the last step. Whereas, in the face hobbed method, hard cutting is the final step. The same machine is used to rough cut and finish cut the gears. The desirable design of the gear is to minimize the weight of the gear and it is done by reducing the material in the gear's rim.

What are Helical Gears?
Helical gears offer a refinement over spur gears. The teeth are cut at an angle, allowing for more gradual, hence smoother meshing between gear wheels, eliminating the whine characteristic of straight-cut gears.
