What is Arc Stud Welding?
Drawn arc stud welding is an extremely efficient method of attaching fasteners primarily to mild steel and stainless steel by utilizing a constant current DC power supply. In this welding process, a welding rectifier serves as an energy source and provides a continuous welding current. The welding time can be adjusted from 10 to 1500 milliseconds. When a weld is initiated, current begins to flow through the stud while the weld gun simultaneously lifts the stud to draw an arc, which melts the base of the stud and adjoining surface on the workpiece. Upon completion of the weld time, the gun plunges the stud back to the workpiece, resulting in a permanent bond as the molten material solidifies. The whole process takes less than one second.

In arc welding, the intense heat needed to melt metal is produced by an electric arc. The arc is formed between the actual work and an electrode (stick or wire) that is manually or mechanically guided along the joint. The electrode can either be a rod with the purpose of simply carrying the current between the tip and the work. Or, it may be a specially prepared rod or wire that not only conducts the current but also melts and supplies filler metal to the joint. Most welding in the manufacture of steel products uses the second type of electrode. Basic Welding Circuit An AC or DC power source, fitted with whatever controls may be needed, is connected by a work cable to the work piece and by a "hot" cable to an electrode holder of some type, which makes an electrical contact with the welding electrode. These machines work on high power factor generally in the range of 0.8 to 0.9 so that overall efficiency of these machines increases causing power system gains . In conventional types of machines the currents in three phases are not equal. One phase is always loaded twice than the other two phases. These machines work on low power factor when drawing small currents generally in the range of 0.3 to 0.6 because of leakage reactance of choke and of the transformer itself. For the same power output, the current taken is more so that overall efficiency of these machines decreases . Again the size of the overall machine is bulky.
