Typically an ammonia cracker unit produces cracked ammonia gas using the ammonia in anhydrous form from cylinders.Usually cracked ammonia contains around 75% hydrogen and 25% nitrogen.The product gas is dry and free of oxygen.
The production of cracked gas amounts to 2.63 nm3/kg of ammonia feed stock. The residual ammonia contents are less than 20 ppm and dew points are upto (-) 50 degC.
As certain application require the need of gas having very low residual ammonia contents
and low gas dew point.Here comes the PSA technology,cracked ammonia is passed through a special grade of dessicant in twin tower Pressure Swing Adsorption System(PSA type).
It has the properties of adsorption of nitrogen molecules at much faster rate than hydrogen molecules.
After this purification process,the residual ammonia contains generally fall below 3 ppm and dew point of gas shows considerable improvement up to (-) 80.

Process Description
Cracking of ammonia is one of the most economical way for on-site generation of hydrogen gas for industrial purposes. For this process, the temperature of 850 degree C is maintained in the electrically heated furnace. A centrifugal cast retort is installed in the center of this furnace. This furnace is filled with nickel catalyst. At this stage, the ammonia cracking takes place in presence of nickel catalyst. The process separates its vital element into 75 % hydrogen and 25% nitrogen gas at dew point of (-)30 degree C. In fact, nitrogen gas is generally inert. This mixture is treated as pure hydrogen gas. This becomes the most economical, trusted, tried and dependable source of on-site hydrogen generation for many small and large industries.
A molecular sieve purifier is used after ammonia cracking unit for reducing residual ammonia content and to get very dry gas. This reduces ammonia down to 1-ppm level and dries gas up to (-) 80°C dew more...

Principle Of Operations:-
Ammonia cracker gas generator produces mixture of hydrogen and nitrogen which is commonly used in heat treatment furnaces. ammonia gas from cylinders is passed over a bed of nickel catalyst at 850 degree Celsius temperatures and cracking takes place into its basic constituents i.e. 75% H2 & 25% N2.
Ammonia cracking reaction is endothermic and hence it requires heat from outside source. The source is electrically heated type furnace (rectangular shape) and a Retort made of heat resistant provided inside to hold the catalyst.
Process Of Operation:-
Ammonia gas is supplied from the battery of cylinders at the battery limit of the unit. The liquid ammonia cylinders are kept vertically in a water trench and vapor ammonia gas from the top of the cylinders is supplied to the unit. The cracked gas production amounts to 2.63 NM3 per Kg of ammonia feed stock, with residual ammonia contents less than 20 ppm and dew points up to ( - ) 50 Deg. C.
Main application of cracked ammonia gas is in heat treatments, that is Sintering, Brazing, Bright Annealing, etc.
